The SNAP Cliff
Beginning November, 1st, unless federal or state legislators act, more than 41 million people will lose their SNAP (federal food assistance) benefits. For many households, SNAP benefits are critical to meeting basic needs.
Action is the antidote to antipathy. There are ways to help! See below for a list of Life Science Cares partners who provide food to neighbors in need. And, in general, some tips for having an impact now:
- Donate money to your local or regional food bank. These organizations are the backbone of the food security system, leveraging purchasing power to procure and distribute food to many other organizations. Your dollar will go further because of their buying superpower.
- Donate money or gift cards to your local food pantry.
- Organized a food drive or donate food to a pantry, community freedge, soup kitchen, etc. But do your research first! Many organizations have wishlists on their website or leverage social media to share specific needs. If you can’t find it—reach out. With the size of this cliff, organizations are going to have to be very strategic about what they need and when to meet needs.
- Working in food security takes a lot of people power—stocking shelves, delivering groceries, preparing meals. Get to work!
