BioConnects New England (BCNE), a multi-state coalition that aims to connect hubs throughout New England to support existing and establish new biomanufacturing infrastructure as a pathway to increase employment, is collaborating with Project Onramp/Life Sciences Cares Boston and Northeastern University’s Professional Leadership And Career Equity (PLACE) Initiative to support access to internships for eligible Northeastern University students.

The initiative focuses on undergraduate Northeastern University students who receive Pell Grants, and who are often first-generation or from historically marginalized communities.

BCNE and its partners are actively identifying resumes for the candidate pipeline for workforce opportunities at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Biogen, and other leading life sciences firms.

Project Onramp/Life Sciences Cares Boston was created to broaden the talent pipeline into the life science industry. The program helps to match undergraduates from low-income backgrounds – who are often first-generation or historically marginalized – with paid summer internships in the life sciences.

“We at Project Onramp understand that there is a lot of undiscovered talent amongst Massachusetts undergraduates, and we are excited to partner with Northeastern to help companies tap that talent,” said Lila Neel, National Director, Project Onramp. “This initiative helps students who may not have considered the life sciences as a career path, to experience the industry, to create professional networks, and to broaden their horizons of what is possible for them.”

Northeastern University’s PLACE is envisioned as a vibrant hub encompassing all programs, resources, and services in the Northeastern University global ecosystem that addresses the intersection of career and identity.

“We are excited to collaborate with Project Onramp and Northeastern PLACE in our united desire to create access to paid summer internships and future placements at companies in the life sciences for talented low-income college students,” said Jared Auclair, co-lead of BCNE, interim Dean of Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies, Vice Provost of Research Economic Development, and Director of the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Lab at Northeastern University. “Together, we hope to help bridge the opportunity gap for promising,motivated students and introduce them to career pathways in the emergent life science industry.”

Created through a Phase 1 Finalist grant through the Build Back Better Regional Challenge in 2021, BioConnects New England has grown to include nine coalition members – The Biopharmaceutical Analysis Training Laboratory at Northeastern University, The Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland, Maine, Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, The I-195 Design and Innovation District in Providence, Rhode Island, Rhode Island Commerce, The University of Rhode Island, and Focus Maine – and over 40 partners across the northeast
