Grant Supports Project Onramp Internship Program for Under-Resourced College Students

News | September 20, 2024 Life Science Cares Boston (LSC) is the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the ‘Quin House Impact Fund to support its Project Onramp internship program. LSC was one of twelve organizations selected as part of the Fund’s Equity & Opportunity pillar, which supports Boston area community partners dedicated to fostering economic opportunities for marginalized groups.

LSC was founded in 2016 as a collaborative effort with the life sciences industry to disrupt poverty and inequity in the Boston area by partnering with community-based organizations working in three areas: basic needs, education, and economic opportunity. Now in its sixth year, LSC’s Project Onramp internship program creates access to paid summer internships for talented, motivated college students who are under-resourced and often first-generation, helping to bridge the opportunity gap for promising young people. Students gain valuable hands-on experience and companies build broader and more diverse talent pipelines.

The ‘Quin House Impact Fund grant will be used to better prepare Project Onramp students for success in applying for internships, interviewing, accepting positions, and joining companies. The Project Onramp team partners with local universities and nonprofits in preparing students for the interview process, helping them to get hired at life science companies, and then providing professional development and mentorship to the cohort throughout the summer. The internships also include workshops, industry leadership panels, and networking sessions. These summer opportunities help inexperienced students build a robust resume as well as a fledgling professional network.

“In the past few years, Project Onramp has served close to 200 undergraduates in Massachusetts each year,” said Lila Neel, national director, Project Onramp. “Students emphasize how transformational this corporate experience is for them, as they think about future careers. The wraparound support that Project Onramp provides to our partner companies as well as to students ensures that both managers and students value this opportunity. The ‘Quin House Impact Fund grant will help us to remain a high-touch program as we scale to 300 students by 2028.”

The ‘Quin House Impact Fund supports six pillars, including Arts and Culture, Discovery and Innovation, Equity and Opportunity, Health and Wellness, Youth and Education, and Earth 360. The LSC grant falls under the Equity and Opportunity pillar, which is part of the Fund’s mission to uplift courageous organizations that bridge gaps and pave the way for those in need.
