LSC & A Vision for Equity

We are proud to stand alongside  industry leaders and companies in denouncing racism and inequality. But our words are not enough.

Now is the time for action.

Before COVID-19 and before the most recent racist incidents across the country, the data was clear—black and brown people in Greater Boston disproportionately experience poverty. A 2018 report from the Federal Reserve found the median net worth of non-immigrant, African-American households in the Boston area was just $8, compared with $247,500 net worth for white households in the area.

That’s why Life Science Cares works alongside community nonprofits to improve access to opportunity and close the gaps for people of color. LSC’s support of nonprofits working in the areas of basic survival, education, and sustainability are focused on creating a community that works for all of our residents and where all residents feel safe and welcome.

We’ve outlined some ways you can help right now.

Project Onramp matches talented, low-income college students with paid summer internships across the industry. The COVID-19 pandemic has left many talented students without the potentially life-changing internships for which they have prepared so diligently. If you are in a position to hire a Project Onramp intern, this is a great way to make an impact RIGHT NOW.

If you can hire an intern for the fall, winter or for Summer 2021, reach out to commit now. Your early commitment will allow us to grow this program to even more deserving students.

Having a mentor helps young people stay engaged in school, develop a positive attitude toward learning and makes them more likely to graduate high school, attend college, and succeed in a work environment.

In the next few weeks, Life Science Cares will launch a mentoring program, allowing college students from low-income and under-resourced backgrounds to build career knowledge and professional connections.

Sign up to mentor and be notified as the program launches.

Leveraging our deep and transparent nonprofit partnerships, we continue to hear from our partner organizations on how we can help them deepen the impact of their work. The LSC staff is working on adding programs, including:

Nonprofit Board Seat Opportunities: There’s no better way to learn about and impact the challenges in our community than be serving on a nonprofit board. We’ll provide another Board Service 101 session (virtually) and share open opportunities.

Community Conversations: How to Use Your Company’s Platform to Advance Equality—We’re hosting a series of conversations with industry leaders who have successfully harnessed corporate resources to make change.

Equity Book Club: The process of learning about racism and processing our own internal biases is an ongoing process. Through reading and thoughtful discussion, we will explore a series of titles in an online book club format. More details to come.
